Salamander Dream
Salamander Dream, by Hope Larson, is a graphic novel which chronicles the early life of Hailey, a girl who enjoys walking in the forest. Hailey is friends with Salamander, a humanoid character wearing a mask who relates stories of his adventures in the story to Hailey. The story is broken into three parts, each part prefaced by a letter explaining at what point the story is taking place in Hailey's life. Hailey grows older and doesn't see Salamander for years, then is playing hide and seek one day when he shows up to show Hailey a better hiding place. She's becoming an adolescent, and proves it with her anger at Salamander for not seeing her for so lone. Hope says she will forgive Salamander for another story, to which Salamander willingly obliges. They talk for a little while, and each of them know Hailey has to go back to her friends soon. There is distinct loss and mutual loneliness. Hailey comes back once more to the forest when she's older, but still a young adult, and comes upon Salamander talking with a friend. This time, she tells him a story, which allows them to share one last burst of happiness before Hailey leaves again. Salamander and Hailey shared storytelling with each other, and now truly understand one another. Hailey leaves, but she is finally content. The art is amazing; besides Hailey and Salamander, the bit characters are all drawn very basically with great skill. The entire novel is colored with either black or green, creating a powerful dramatic effect. The art is usually very simple, with few details, but nonetheless complex and moving. Check it out. |
